Drawing Borders

Maps are abstractions of larger spaces. They reduce information to a scale more susceptible to understanding. My work takes on the planet from different angles. I depict the crazy quilt of borders created mostly out of conflict, cultural differences and colonialism. In Terra Cognita every sovereign nation is shown in alphabetical order from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Cut from painted paper and collaged on circles to reference the globe. The colors represent different regions, i.e. the red shapes on yellow circles are European nations and the purple shapes on green circles are the nations of Africa etc.
